What is Merino Wool?

Grown by Merino sheep, Merino wool is softer and finer than regular wool, making it more comfortable to wear against your skin (not itchy like regular wool can be!).  This natural fibre is ideal for those who love outdoor adventures, no matter what the season.

Why choose Merino Wool?

Why Choose Merino Wool?

Merino wool is naturally thermoregulating, keeping you cool when it’s warm and warm when it’s cool.  Wearing it against your skin helps transport sweat away from your body, making it ideal for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

The Benefits of Merino Wool

It’s a natural, renewable fibre designed to keep sheep comfortable in a wide range of extreme temperatures and environments

It Helps to regulate body temperature – when it’s cold, the natural crimps in the fibre traps air creating an insulation pocket. When it’s warm, it transports sweat away from the skin, helping to keep you cool and dry.

It helps to move sweat, keeping you drier. Because Merino wool is porous, moisture is transported in a vapour state between the fibre plates, so you’re not left feeling wet and clammy after a workout.  Synthetic fabrics on the other hand are not porous, which means they don’t wick sweat away until it’s already a liquid.  This encourages your body to heat up more in order to evaporate the sweat

It’s ideal for layering. On colder training days you may need to layer up to stay warm.  Laying in all Merino lets your body breathe easy and helps the outflow of excess heat.  Each Merino layer helps to transport sweat away from the skin to the outside of your gear while it’s still a vapour, keeping you warm and dry.

It resists odour! Merino wool aborbs odour caused by bacteria – trapping their smell and keeping them from building up, meaning you can wear more and wash less without having to worry about smelling.  This makes it the perfect travel or hiking companion when you don’t have much space in your luggage or facilities for washing.

It’s soft. Because Merino wool is super-fine (a single fibre is 1/3 the diameter of a human hair!) it bends when it meets skin, so it’s not itchy and prickly like regular wool can be.

It helps provide UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) Protection. Depending on how they’re spun and dyed, Merino fibres help block out the sun’s harmful rays.

It’s biodegradable. Merino wool disappears after about 12 months in the ground, releasing carbon and nutrients back into the soil

It’s fire-resistant. Merino typically won’t melt or burst into flames – helpful to know if you’re hanging around a bonfire.
